This Is My 2nd Pregnancy: Here’s 10 Things I’m Doing Different This Time Around
Heading into my second pregnancy, I’m gearing up for another birth center experience, just like my first. This time around, there’s just a few things I know I want to do differently.
I’ve always found it super helpful to read about how other moms plan to handle their births differently, picking up tips and tricks along the way. So, I thought I’d share my own list!
Whether you’re preparing for your first baby or your fourth, I hope you find something useful in my experiences!
Prioritizing Protein Intake
This time around, I’m much more conscious about my protein consumption. During my first pregnancy, I didn’t focus much on it, and my morning sickness dragged on until I was 20 weeks along. This wasn’t just uncomfortable; it made it hard to eat well.
Now, I make sure to include more protein-rich foods in my diet, which has not only improved my overall nutrition but also helped reduce my morning sickness, which only lasted up to the 12th week this time. And yes, I still treat myself to my favorite nightly ice cream snack!
Staying Hydrated with Electrolytes
Hydration is always a top tip for pregnancy, but it’s not just about water—electrolytes are crucial too. They help maintain your body’s balance of fluids, which is even more important when you’re expecting.
In my second pregnancy, I’ve been diligent about adding an electrolyte mix, like LMNT, to my daily water intake. I’ve noticed that skipping this step tends to leave me with a headache and a bit of crankiness the next day.
Embracing Gentle Movement
I’m not the type to hit the gym hard, but this pregnancy, I’m making it a point to stay active. It’s not about intense workouts; it’s about moving more. I’ve been taking regular walks with my toddler, spending more time outdoors, and throwing in a couple of light arm workouts each week to combat my ‘noodle arms.’
This gentle approach to exercise has made a significant difference in how I feel during this pregnancy—definitely more energized and positive!
Managing Stress Levels
During my first pregnancy, everything felt like a whirlwind. I was juggling school, moving houses, and navigating new family dynamics with my husband’s family—all while trying to get a grip on being pregnant for the first time. It was overwhelming, and frankly, it took a toll, contributing to me going into labor earlier than expected.
This time, I’ve scaled back significantly. I’m focusing on what truly matters and setting boundaries to keep stress at bay. I’m more selective about who I spend time with, ensuring they’re a positive presence around my boys and me. This has made my second pregnancy smoother and much less stressful.
Power Napping with a Toddler
My toddler is still in the nap phase, thankfully, and most days, I manage to align our schedules so we can both recharge. Slipping in a 20-minute power nap while he sleeps has been a game-changer for my energy levels and mood. It makes a significant difference, especially towards the end of the day when fatigue starts to set in. It’s not just for me; the whole family benefits when I’m not running on empty.
Online Birth Class
During my first pregnancy, I immersed myself in the Bradley Method through a detailed book that was incredibly helpful. However, life with a toddler doesn’t leave much room for quiet reading!
This time, I’ve opted for Bridget Teyler’s Built to Birth class. Bridget is not only well-versed in childbirth as a DONA Certified Doula and a Lamaze Certified Childbirth Educator, but she’s also a mom, so she gets it.
Her practical, accessible advice is just what I need this time around, and her YouTube channel is a great resource for quick information.
Joining a Hands-On Birth Class
Along with the online sessions, I’ve decided to join a hands-on birth class available at my birth center, and it’s thankfully free. My husband and I are excited because it’s hands-on—literally! We’ll learn all sorts of techniques to manage labor pain.
I’m all for anything that might ease the pain, and I love that this class will help my husband feel more connected and less like a bystander during the process.
Fine-Tuning the Birth Plan
Last time, my birth plan was more of a rough sketch. This time, I’m getting specific. I know now that the little details can make a huge difference—like ensuring it’s just my husband and me as much as possible, keeping the room quiet, playing some calming music, and yes, having my favorite essential oils diffusing. I’m putting it all down in writing to help make our birthing experience as close to what we hope for as possible.
Keeping It Just Us This Time
Last time, having my sister there turned out to be a lovely surprise, but this round, my husband and I want to share these moments more privately. We’ve found our footing and feel ready to handle this together, just us two (well, maybe with my mother-in-law around for a bit of extra support). We’re looking forward to savoring the intimacy of this experience, just focusing on each other and our new arrival.
Finding Strength in Jesus
After my first go-round with pregnancy, I’ve become acutely aware of how much is beyond my control. It was a bit overwhelming at first, especially when I learned I was expecting again. But these challenges have deepened my faith, pushing me to rely more on Jesus and less on my own plans.
Now, I’m feeling weirdly peaceful and even excited about what’s to come. I’m holding my plans for this birth gently, trusting that whatever happens is part of God’s bigger and better plan for me and my baby.
